How we triple-check a number
CHART is not a real-time terminal and not a press-release mill. A graphic ships when a figure can survive three questions.
1. Primary. Who originally measured it? We prefer statistical agencies and treaty-mandated institutes: IEA, IMF, UN Population Division, SIPRI, WSTS, Ember, World Gold Council, World Nuclear Association. The URL and the date sit under every story.
2. Corroborated. Does a second independent publisher, using a different method or a later vintage, point the same direction? Ember versus IEA on electricity, SIPRI fact sheet versus press release, WSTS versus a trade-press restatement of the same table. Where they disagree, we say so — nuclear GWe in 2050 is the clearest example.
3. Recency and method. Is this a print, a forecast, or a reconstruction? Forecasts (WSTS 2026, IEA 2030) are labelled. Where a publisher gives endpoints and growth rates but not every year, we interpolate and mark the series as reconstructed — see the AI / conventional split on data-centre power. Headline key stats are never interpolated.
We do not scrape unofficial dashboards for a prettier line. We do not mix nominal and real dollars in one series without saying so. Exchange-rate sensitive ranks (SIPRI military spending) are flagged.
If a publisher revises, the graphic should be updated. The “Updated” date on each story is the last time we reconciled the figures with the sources below.

Ibbotson/Bloomberg Agg splice: only two calendar years with stocks and bonds both down, 1931 and 1969 (near-miss 2018). A different bond than Damodaran’s 10-year — 1941 and 2018 appear on Damodaran, not as Callan crash years. Not plotted on the Damodaran rank.
