A launch a day is a factory

SpaceNews, 3 January 2026: 324 orbital launch attempts in 2025, up 25% from the 259 record of 2024, which was itself up 17% from 221 in 2023. SpaceX flew 165 Falcon 9 missions — more than everyone else, together. China flew 92. The United States, including Rocket Lab’s New Zealand electrons, flew 193. In 2020 the whole world attempted 107 orbits and SpaceX 26. Five years is a regime change. Most of those 165 flights were Starlink. Launch is how a distribution network is restocked.

Two systems, not a market

The chart is a duopoly of industrial policy plus one reusable rocket. China’s 92 came from ‘roughly two dozen vehicle families’. SpaceX’s 165 came from one. That is the investing tell. Cadence is a process, not a vehicle. Russia, Europe, Japan and India together are a rounding error on the 2025 bar. Pair this with Eleven thousand birds: the payload is the constellation; the rocket is the conveyor. Starship’s promise is that the conveyor gets cheaper. The 2025 fact is that Falcon is already the world’s launch industry.

The long view is mass to orbit as a utility

SpaceX has talked, to the FAA, about 10,000 launches a year within five years. That is a speech. 165 is a print. The path from 26 to 165 in five years is the relevant slope. Distribution tech in orbit — broadband, sensing, eventually compute — is gated by that slope, by licenses, and by whether a second reusable operator appears. Own cadence. Do not own a deck that needs 10,000.

Orbital mass is a concentrated industrial process. Own the reusable cadence and the payloads it restocks. Do not pay for a 10,000-launch slide.

  • Avoid ‘space’ baskets that are 2010s satellite-radio
