India is now the most populous country on Earth
UN World Population Prospects 2024: India passed China in 2023 and will not give the title back. By 2025 India has about 1.46 billion people, China about 1.42 billion and falling. A century’s ranking, inverted in a year.

A ranking the 20th century treated as geology
UN WPP 2024: India overtook China in 2023 (1,428.6 million against 1,425.7 million) and the gap is now a bus lane. Mid-2025 prints used in UN dashboards put India near 1.46 billion and China near 1.42 billion, with China already falling. For fifty years every wall-map of power started with China first. The map is wrong. Pair this with India’s decade, China’s middle age — growth rates — and The age of fewer children. Population is not destiny. It is a labour-force option with an expiry date. India’s TFR is already about 2.0. The youth bulge is a window.
Mass is not the same as workers, or as output
China at 1.42 billion with a TFR of 1.01 is a country that will have more grandparents than shop-floors. India at 1.46 billion still has the workers, not yet the capital stock. Output still sits where the factories are: China remains the larger GDP and the chokepoint in solar, batteries, magnets. The investing mistake is to buy ‘the most people’ as if it were ‘the most profits’. The investing mistake in the other direction is to ignore a domestic market that just became the largest pool of humans.
The long view is two ageing curves, offset by twenty years
By 2050 both countries are older. India’s window is the 2020s and 2030s. After that it is East Asia with worse infrastructure. Own the Indian compounding years as a long-duration allocation. Own China where it is still the factory. Do not own a slogan about who has more people in 2025 as if that were a 2050 forecast.

Horizon 7–20 years · Educational, not advice
India’s population lead is a labour and consumption option with a twenty-year fuse. Size Indian domestic compounders for the window; size China as a factory, not as a demographic story.
Where the map points
- Broad Indian equity, financials and domestic consumer
- Public digital rails and payments
- China only at chokepoints: solar, batteries, magnets
- Do not pay 2017 EM-China multiples for 2026 India without looking at valuation
What can break it
- Indian valuations that already discount the window
- Jobs that do not appear as fast as people do
- WPP is a model — censuses still argue

The IMF still has India as the fastest-growing large economy in 2026. China is slower, heavier, and still the larger gravity well.

Africa has 1.5 billion people. Europe has 740 million. By 2050 the UN sees 2.5 billion Africans and 710 million Europeans. This is the demographic chart the 20th century would not have believed.
