One in nine adults has diabetes
IDF Diabetes Atlas 2025: 589 million adults aged 20–79 lived with diabetes in 2024. That is one in nine. The 2050 path is 853 million. 252 million do not know they have it.

The metabolic century, in patients
The IDF’s 11th Atlas is 589 million adults in 2024 — past the 500 million line, one in nine of everyone aged 20 to 79, on track for 853 million by 2050. 252 million are undiagnosed. China, India and Indonesia alone hold half of those. Pair this with One billion people, obese and The shot that bent the curve. Obesity is the stock. Diabetes is the complication. GLP-1s are a drug class that, at $66 billion, still reaches a rounding error of the 589 million.
A payer problem before it is a molecule problem
The investable stack is diagnostics in middle-income countries, insulin and SGLT2s that already work, incretins where payers can stand the bill, and the renal/retinal/foot-care that diabetes always becomes. A 2050 path of 853 million is not a bull case for one ticker. It is a fiscal case for every health ministry that already cannot pay for 589.
The long view is 853, with or without the shot
Own the boring diabetes stack and the manufacturing of the next metabolic class. Do not own a story in which 589 million people all take a $1,000-a-month pen.
