Almost half of Korea lives in Seoul

WUP 2025 Seoul 22.5 million. WPP 2024 Korea about 51.7 million. That is 43% of a country in one capital. Delhi is 2% of India. The capital is not the country. Except when it is.

A country can be a city

Forty-three percent of Koreans live in the Seoul urban fabric. Twenty-seven percent of Japanese live in Tokyo’s. A fifth of Egyptians, Filipinos and Bangladeshis live in Cairo, Manila and Dhaka. Delhi, 30 million people, is 2% of India. The same word — capital — hides two species. One is a primate city that is the labour market, the university, the airport and the marriage market. The other is a large city in a continental country. Population change ‘from countries’ capital’ is the first species: when Seoul’s TFR sits at 0.6-range, it is not a district statistic. It is the country’s.

Jakarta is large. Indonesia is larger.

41.9 million people and only 15% of Indonesia. That is why Nusantara can be announced without moving the chart, and why Jakarta can sink without Indonesia shrinking. Pair this with Jakarta was thirtieth and Korea still the lowest-fertility civilisation. A primate capital in a low-fertility country is a housing, care and automation story. A primate capital in a young country is a water, jobs and flood story.

The long view is two books

Own the urban stack in Dhaka, Cairo, Manila, Jakarta — young primate cities. Own automation and later-life care in Seoul and Tokyo — old primate cities. Do not own a single ‘emerging-market capital’ ETF that mixes 43% of Korea with 2% of India.

Horizon 10–25 years · Educational, not advice

Primate capitals are national labour markets. Young ones need water and housing. Old ones need robots and care. Delhi is not Seoul.

Where the map points

  • Urban water, housing and transit in Dhaka, Cairo, Manila, Jakarta
  • Automation and later-life care in Seoul and Tokyo
  • Indian domestic compounders — the country is not the capital
  • Avoid a blended ‘EM capitals’ product

What can break it

  • A metro definition that is not a tax base
  • Fertility or migration that re-steepens a primate pyramid
  • A new-capital project (Nusantara) that is a headline, not a move
