UN World Urbanization Prospects 2025, new Degree of Urbanisation: Jakarta 41.9 million, the world’s largest city. The previous vintage had it at about 12 million and 30th. Dhaka 36.6. Tokyo 33.4, no longer first. Nine of the ten largest cities are in Asia. Seven of them are capitals.

A definition that moved 30 million people
The UN’s 2025 urbanisation revision did not discover Jakarta. It counted the city the way a satellite sees it: one continuous urban fabric, 41.9 million people, first on earth. The previous vintage had Jakarta at about 12 million and 30th. Dhaka, on the same lens, is 36.6 million and second. Tokyo, which spent a generation as a synonym for ‘largest city’, is 33.4 million and third — and shrinking. This is not a ranking of city-proper governments. Seven of the ten largest are capitals
Jakarta, Dhaka, Tokyo, Delhi, Cairo, Manila, Seoul. China’s two entries, Shanghai and Guangzhou, are not Beijing. India’s second, Kolkata, is not Delhi. The capital is still where a poor country puts its state, its airport and its first metro. Indonesia can legislate a new capital in Nusantara. It cannot legislate 42 million people across the Java Sea. The investing map is the primate city: housing, water, cooling, buses, flood defences — and a hard no on luxury residential in a shrinking rich capital that needs 29-year-old buyers.
The long view is Dhaka first
UNRIC wrapping WUP 2025: by 2050 Dhaka and Jakarta each clear 50 million; Tokyo falls to about 31 million and seventh. Karachi enters the top ten. Mexico City and São Paulo have already left it. Own the urban stack in the capitals that are still adding people. Do not own a 2018 wall-map that still has Tokyo first.

UN: more than half of humanity lives in urban areas. In 1950 it was about a third. By 2050 it will be about two-thirds. The century’s demand is a skyline: housing, wires, water, heat, and a bus.

India is now the most populous country on Earth
UN World Population Prospects 2024: India passed China in 2023 and will not give the title back. By 2025 India has about 1.46 billion people, China about 1.42 billion and falling. A century’s ranking, inverted in a year.
